Magnifying Lamp

Getting A Magnifying Lamp

A magnifying lamp is used to see small details for those doing craft work or working with small items such as stamps or coins. The two main features of these lamps are the light, so you can see what your doing clearly, and the lens which provides magnification, giving you a larger view of the details of the object. If you do a lot of work with any number of items that require you to view small details, then consider purchasing a magnifying lamp to help you along. The low investment will pay off in reduced eye strain, and better quality work.

There are three main types of magnifier lamps available. Your basic model is a lamp with a stand you can place in your workspace. These lamps allow you to use magnification adjustments and let you move the magnifier light unit up or down to give you space for different sized items. The desktop magnifier lamp is the least expensive type you can buy. If you need all the space you can use in your workspace, then you might want to consider a floor lamp or a magnifier lamp that attaches to the side of your workspace.

A floor based magnifying lamp is ideal if your desktop or workspace has limited room. Just place one of these lamps next to your desk and the hinged arm can be placed over your workpiece. A lamp like this keeps the base of the lamp out of your way, but it will cost you more money.

Last but not least is the type of lamp that attaches to the side of your desk with screws or a clamp. These types of magnifier lamps are a great compromise between a desktop unit and a floor model. You will find that the price range of these lamps falls somewhere in between the prices of a desktop or floor lamp.

Magnifying glasses commonly are six inches in diameter but you will find that different magnification lens sizes are available. There are different sizes and types of bulbs for magnifier lamps as well. Fluorescent tubes and LED lights offer the advantages of generating less heat than incandescent bulbs and they use less energy. If you need to replace a burned out light, then you should be able to find replacement lights at a hardware store. If they don't stock the bulb you need, they can likely have it specially ordered. Some magnifying lamps give you the option of plugging the lamp into an electrical wall socket or using batteries. Batteries are a very handy feature if you are traveling or do not have a power socket within range of your working area.

Magnifying lamps are sold in department stores, hardware stores, and arts and crafts shops. If saving money is a primary concern, then your best bet will probably be a large discount store chain. A lot of times you can find them for sale on eBay as well. If want the best deal you can get, then start checking out stores that have used items or garage sales.
